Farewell to Mr. Gygax, the first DM
“There is no intimacy; it’s not live,” he said of online games. “It’s being translated through a computer, and your imagination is not there the same way it is when you’re actually together with a group of people. It reminds me of one time where I saw some children talking about whether they liked radio or television, and I asked one little boy why he preferred radio, and he said, ‘Because the pictures are so much better.’ ”

Deep Space 9

Guys, way back last year I was planning to start a gaming cafe. I've put up some cash to launch the project, but I could only manage 50% of the required starting capital. If you're interested we could do the alliance thing. Right now my colleague at the office (who is also a certified gamer) is interested at 1/2 share. I'm starting to call it Project DS9 (or deep space nine, the ship from the stark trek series). The plan is to have the pc units prepared for the inevitable StarCraft II launch, and the popular local lan games (DotA, Counter, Quake).
If marns visits us this year, we could relive the days of counterstrike and see if the feared Pax-Marns combo would still dominate assault and ddust. Reminder to Q for the friendly-fire. And to go for Natz first because his camp tactics could turn him into a fossil. hehe.

Let's Go Board!

Marn's, I've been thinking... our days of DnD is sadly falling into what might be "a thing when we have had too much time outside of social life". These days flipping through pages of rules, designing the perfect rogue/fighter/mage, or committing to memory 90% of the dungeon traps and monsters require time that is now harder to find, what with all the other things that are higher than DnD (yeah, there things higher than DnD now).
But there is still some gaming light at the end of these years of dark tunnels... the long drought is about to end.
I propose: GAMEBOARDS
Why? Because rules can be learned in a day. There is still the luck of the die roll, and there are also a variety of strategies to suit the player's gaming style. Playtime is also just under a maximum of 4 hours, enough to quench our gaming thirsts for the weekends. Gameboards are also very portable too. Plus, girls can learn the rules and play then and there--we still have enough guys who are willing to lend a hand. :)
Okay, the particular gameboard I have in mind is Descent: Journeys in the Dark, by Fantasy Flight Games. It's a 2-5 player game. One acts as a dungeon master and builds a random dungeon made of pre-cut tiles. There are a variety of character classes available for the players as well. And there are cards that grant items, special abilities, etc. Of course there are also monsters. To win, at least one of the players must find the artifact hidden inside the dungeon room.
Basically, the players still cooperate, while the DM harasses them with all sorts of traps and monsters, hehehe. The play can end in just under 4 hours. Lovely to suit those weekend afternoons with the gang.
That is why we ask you: Marns, to send us a Christmas boon! The sooner the better! The gameboard is around 50$. We can pool resources here, no probs and pay you back. And for a side note, there's also a wonderful expansion "Altar of Despair" to boot.
Pleeeassee!

Ayu2x Pax!
Pax flies to Japan today and he will not be back until the year 2009. That's 2 years guys.
That brings a list of
1) we will miss our mage
2) no, revise 1) as folllows: we will miss our mage who masterminded a direct assault on a tower-outpost infested with the Cult. He doesn't care that he fried the high-priest with a shrewdly placed fireball, he wants to open the tower for business (trading or something). The mage believes that the greater good of Faerun depends on towers open to the world for business and not some draco-wacko-lich-baloney or whatever.
3) basketball. according to statistics, team south (talisay-minglanillia-pardo) has more wins than team north (cebu-lahug) whenever pax plays for team north. Or was it the other way around? The future of our weekend basketball is likely to keep its current immaculate level of noob-ness both ways anyhow.
4) all things japanese. for two years, there's no question pax can handle a dizzying utopia of schoolgirls, sushi, hentai, anime, katanas, gadgets, godzilla, maybe the power rangers, trains, weirdos and the bizarre, j-pop, and a gushing oversupply of video games; all these in whatever order he feels gratifying.
Ok so that's a shortlist. Anyway Pax, gambatte yo!

Building a Kingdom
I find some guilty pleasures really pleasurable. That's a boring way of saying it but at the moment, Makai Kingdom is eating most of my nights.
For the uninitiated, MK is the latest (but not so latest at this moment of writing) tactical-RPG-strategy PS2 game from NIS America along their tradition of Japanese import games the likes of which include Disgaea, La Pucelle, and Phantom Brave.
The pleasure is in the growing of the custom-made characters, getting them fitted with cool items (some of which are stolen from monsters by the party's thief), and destroying the enemy boss. It's still the basic create character-kill boss-get loot-level up formula but is structured out around the Japanese RPG taste--that is, you typically need to do a lot of level grinding. The last time I level-grinded was Tactics Ogre (Game Boy Advance) and I remember those late-night (indulgent if you ask me) sessions.
The whole game itself throws out serious themes and instead rests on cute humor against a backdrop of netherworld characters. I find it charming to squash a dungeon critter with a frying pan; yes it's true! An over-sized +74 Attack + 74 Defense frying pan! No warrior worth his double-bladed sword would wield a frying pan. But a chef will. That's right, a chef! That's crazy but cool for a character class! A master chef could whack a monster pretty damn badly just as a standard warrior can. It's all about wackiness in the whacking. Quote that.
I don't know when I'll be able to shelve the game off, but it's been a nice break from God of War I and II (really awesome games for the PS2 by the way).
Until the next mood swing, it be master chefs an der frying pans o' death.
